Hiking routes in Latium, landscapes full of history

Fascinating medieval landscapes and countless green areas characterise the area of “Tuscia”, in Lazio. An oasis for chilling out and enjoying good food, ideal for hiking and exploring, thanks to the Etruscan peaks and the Via Francigena route, where life is marked by nature and rural habits, from the mountains to the sea.

Then we pass by a large erratic block, the Etruscan Pyramid, carved with a series of terraces on different levels and used in Etruscan times as a large stone altar. The walk in the woods of Bomarzo will allow you to discover old, charming streets of Etruscan-Roman quarries and to find, hidden in the dense and sometimes inextricable vegetation, mysterious caves. The Colle Casale Castle is located near the village of Chia, it was one of the most important papal strongholds east of the city of Viterbo. Along this route we will still encounter the rocky site of Santa Cecilia with the remains of the medieval church. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Among dense and tangled vegetation, interrupted by wide spaces, one can admire the imposing ruins of the ancient village. The morphology of the landscape presents different types of characteristics: limestone marl type situations typical of Monti della Tolfa alternate with tuff landscapes typical of the Sabatina region. The hill is rich in Etruscan tombs, small caves covered with thick vegetation characterized by giant ferns and flowers of rare beauty. Bubbling water springs like the Zolfatare are another feature of the landscape and evidence of volcanic activity in the area. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 – Viterbo and Civita di Bagnoregio
Breakfast at the hotel and departure to Viterbo. Meeting with the local guide and visit of the city, which preserves a beautiful historic center including the urban core surrounded by the wall. In the central Piazza of San Lorenzo are the Cathedral, built in the 12th century and the Palace of the Popes, which was erected as a papal residence as early as 1255 and marked history. Not far away, the Plebiscite Square with the Priori Palace, considered to be the historic, social and institutional center of the city and which, through the Pinacoteca, is linked to the Podesta Palace, of medieval origin. Lunch at the restaurant and drive to Civita di Bagnoregio. Subject through the ages of incessant erosion, the cliff of Civita is today a spectacular tuff island, floating on a sea of unstable clay channels. The only access to the impressive picturesque little village is the pedestrian bridge opened in 1965. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

The Etruscan Necropolis of San Giuliano is the only necropolis that offers a comprehensive overview of the development of Etruscans funerary architecture. Surrounded by the many necropolises is the San Giuliano fortress, with imposing defensive walls made of tuff.
